After completing one film, Ruddy co-created Hogan’s Heroes (CBS, 1965–1971). The sitcom was a critical and commercial success, running for six seasons. As the sitcom came to an end, Ruddy went back to producing films.

He made two comedies: Little Fauss and Big Halsy (1970), about two motorcycle racers, and Making It (1971), about a high school student who has a bed with his gerontophobic gym teacher’s wife.

Ruddy’s 1974 adaptation of his own story treatment, The Longest Yard, was very successful financially.

The film was described as “the first successful modern sports movie” and was subsequently remade twice with Ruddy as executive producer (as Mean Machine (2001) and as The Longest Yard (2005)).

After that, he created and produced some well-known movies and series like:

  • Coonskin
  • The Macahans
  • The Cannonball Run
  • Death Hunt
  • Megaforce
  • Cannonball Run II

Conflicts

Ayn Rand was a writer and philosopher best known for her work in the novel Atlas Shrugged. Ruddy worked with her for some time, intending to turn the novel into a movie.

He eventually purchased the rights to do so in the mid-1970s, but the project never moved beyond the planning stages.

Rand was very demanding regarding the script, wanting final approval before moving forward. Ruddy agreed to this, but her friends pointed out that he could easily shoot the approved script and cut out all of her speeches in post-production.

Rand then asked for final editing approval, which neither Ruddy nor the director had the power to give her. In response, she withdrew her support from the film entirely.

In 2004, Ruddy produced “Million Dollar Baby,” for which he won his second Oscar for Best Picture.

This was especially meaningful to Ruddy as Clint Eastwood, who had presented Ruddy with the Best Picture Oscar for “The Godfather” over 30 years earlier, was his co-awardee.

In late 2015, it was announced that Ruddy had acquired the rights to Rand’s “Atlas Shrugged” and would be making a movie for worldwide release.

In 2021, his daughter Alexandra Ruddy became co-principal at Albert S. Ruddy Productions.
