The Career of Kevin Arkadie

Kevin Arkadie, who grew up in the early 1960s watching television, wanted to do something creative with his life. His work today involves writing and producing shows for major networks. 

In an interview with Contemporary Black Biography in January 1998, Kevin stated, “I wanted to do something creative, something a little different.”

Arkadie took matters into his own hands by writing his own roles and seeking out supportive communities at the Frederick Douglass Creative Arts Center, the Warren Robertson Studio, and the Negro Ensemble Company.

With relatively low workshop fees, and scholarships often available, the young talent was able to get practice writing and make contacts with other artists.

After receiving a grant from the Philadelphia Drama Guild in 1983, Arkadie wrote a play called “Statues.” The play was about a suburban mother who realized she was gay after years of marriage. 

The work was well-received at a reading at the Guild. In 1986, Arkadie wrote another play called “A Life Like the Rest” and it had a showcase run at the Judith Anderson Theater.

After starting off his Hollywood career as a freelance television writer, penning an episode of Nightwatch in 1988, he landed his first staff position on the series I’ll Fly Away in 1990. 

The show was set in the late 1950s and early 1960s and starred Sam Waterston as a southern lawyer. It was nominated for Emmy Awards for outstanding drama in both of its two seasons on the air.

In March of that year, a Law and Order episode, “Wager,” aired. It was an Arkadie script about the killing of a star athlete’s father which is linked to gambling debts and threats against the baseball player’s family. 

That same year Arkadie wrote the script for a two-hour TV movie called The Vernon Johns Story. It’s about the pastor who was a predecessor of Martin Luther King, Jr. and laid a lot of the groundwork for Dr. King’s accomplishments in the Civil Rights movement.

By 1994, Arkadie’s name was becoming more well-recognized in Hollywood and as a result, his agent had an easier time booking his jobs. 

When big-time crime show producer Dick Wolf was looking to create the show New York Undercover for the Fox network, he chose Arkadie to be a co-creator.

Arkadie wrote the initial teleplay for Cops and remained on the show through its first full season. In 1995, he sold a script for an episode of Homicide: Life on the Street, continuing his success with writing for cop shows.

In 1995, Arkadie landed a spot as a writer and producer on the highly successful hospital drama, Chicago Hope. 

The series received numerous Emmy Award nominations, including one for outstanding drama series for the 1995-96 season.  Arkadie’s episode also earned actor Richard Pryor a nomination for his role.

For the 1996-97 TV season, Arkadie moved to supervise the producer of the ABC/DreamWorks SKG collaboration High Incident. 

Following the cancellation of High Incident, Arkadie moved to supervise the producer of one of the most popular television shows, N.Y.P.D. Blue.

Between High Incident and N.Y.P.D. Blue, Arkadie took the money he’d saved from his TV work and used it to produce a play he had been working on for six years. 

While on the set of Chicago Hope, actor Dan Lauria asked Arkadie about a script he had heard read in New York a few years before.
