Jack was born in Hollywood in 1953, and graduated from Sylmar High School in 1971.

After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps  and served with distinction. He was honorably discharged as a sergeant in January of 1976.

While studying mathematics and engineering at California State University at Northridge, he followed his father, Ralph Carpenter, into the business and drove part-time for Pat Hustis.

Jack began to truly learn and hone his craft under the mentorship of “Chainsaw” Tommy May, Tom Prophet, and Gaylin Schultz (all former Cammy winners).

His big break came when he did a pilot for the action TV show “CHiPs” for MGM. When the show was picked up, cinematographer Robert Sparks insisted that Jack be put on payroll full time due to the risky nature of the show.

When MGM later objected to this arrangement for monetary reasons, Sparks threatened to quit the show and take his entire department with him.

Jack’s filmography includes a variety of box-office successes such as “A View to a Kill,” “To Live and Die in LA,” “Terminator 2,” “Forever Young,” “True Lies,” “Die Hard with a Vengeance,” “Enemy of the State,” “Gone in 60 Seconds,” “The Italian Job,” “Bridesmaids” and most recently, “Identity Thief.”

Carpenter Camera Cars

Jack has always been a technical innovator, designing and adopting various technologies to make his job easier and to keep his fellow crew members safe.

For example, he designed and built switchable battery systems that could run everything from nine lights to carbon arc “brutes” without an onboard generator.

Furthermore, long before cell phones were invented, he equipped his vehicles with public address systems and long-distance studio frequency radio equipment to ensure clear communication with his police escort and traffic control.

Jack is the founder of Carpenter Camera Cars and an innovator in air suspension technology. He has designed and built all types of vehicles to move cameras, from the first ever camera ATV to modern, high-speed camera cars.

When Jack was first starting out, he learned how to slide a car while it was being towed with actors in the car and with crews operating the cameras. It was all about speed and horsepower, but it put a lot of stress on the equipment and on the crews.

To solve this problem, Jack used existing pneumatic technology to create a simple device that would control the brakes on the back of a towed vehicle.

This allowed him to slide the car around at significantly lower and safer speeds.
