The Career of Luis Trenker

In 1921, Luis Trenker first got a taste of the film industry when he helped director Arnold Fanck with one of his mountain films. The main actor was unable to do the necessary stunts, so Trenker took on the leading role.

He gradually began taking on more roles on set until, by 1928, he was writing, directing, and starring in his own films.

At this point, he had left his job as an architect to focus solely on his films.

In 1932, Trenker created a historical film called The Rebel with Curtis Bernhardt and Edwin H. Knopf. The film is set in 1809 during the Napoleonic Wars and follows the story of a Tyrolean mountaineer Severin Anderlan leading a revolt against the occupying French forces.

Trenker stated that the film’s plotline was designed to mirror what was happening in contemporary Germany at the time, as the country was rejecting the terms of the Treaty of Versailles.

Trenker’s work idealizes the connection between people and their homeland. In his 1934 film, Der verlorene Sohn (The Prodigal Son), he points out the decadence of city life.

Trenker’s work unknowingly fell into the hands of Nazi propagandists who capitalized on the nationalistic tendencies in his films. However, Trenker refused to allow his films to be used for such a cause and eventually moved to Rome in 1940.

He made two more documentary films before returning to Bolzano and retiring from filmmaking altogether.

His style wasn’t just restricted to nationalistic, folkloristic, and heroic clichés that were popular during the 1930s.

In fact, his impersonation of a hungry, impoverished immigrant in depression-era New York was so memorable and well-received that it influenced future Italian neorealism filmmakers like Roberto Rossellini.

Trenker would go on to write 23 books based on his war experiences, the most important of which were Fort Rocca Alta and Berge in Flammen. The latter was made into the 1931 film Mountains on Fire.

Trenker made several attempts to start an architecture business in Bolzano after the war, but unfortunately, they were all unsuccessful.

In 1924, he graduated from the Technical University of Graz and then began working as an architect in Bolzano with Clemens Holzmeister, another Austrian architect.

Trenker also participated in the 1924 Winter Olympics in Chamonix as a member of the Italian five-man bobsled team. However, they only placed sixth under the leadership of Lodovico Obexer.

After World War II

Trenker was accused of fascist opportunism after the war, but the charges were eventually dropped.

In the 1950s, he returned to the movie industry, though by 1965 he was making primarily documentary films that focused on the Austrian province of Tyrol and South Tyrol (his homeland), which had become part of Italy. He also returned to writing about the mountains.

Trenker’s work in documentary filmmaking shone a light on the experiences of those living in Austrian provinces that had become part of Italy after the war.

His focus on the Tyrol and South Tyrol provided a much-needed perspective on what life was like in these regions. His writing about the mountains was also highly praised and offered a different take on this well-known landscape.
