During her time at Blair, she sketched several comics. She also won the first prize for comics in the newspaper individual writing and editing contest. Later she attended the School of Visual Arts in New York.

Her major success came from her TV productions. At first, she was hired as a storyboard revisionist for the series Adventure Time. But her skills and quality work during the first season of the show impressed the director. Consequently, she was promoted to the storyboard artist.

The second season of the series was written by Sugar herself. She put her own life experiences into the character, Marceline. This proved to be very successful and inspiring for her projects to come.

She remained associated with Adventure Time until the fifth season of the series. During all this time, she was simultaneously working on Steven Universe. But during the fifth season of Adventure Time, it became impossible for her to carry both the series together.

She worked as an executive producer for Steven Universe throughout all its seasons. She was the storyboard writer for most of its episodes. The series aired from 2013 to 2019.

In 2019, a full-length movie based on this series was also released. Sugar was the director of this movie.
