Ruth and David bought Hintlesham Hall in Hintlesham, Suffolk, in 1983, as a restaurant and cookery school from Robert Carrier. They turned it into a 33-room hotel with an 18-hole golf course over six years. 

Then they bought the Fox and Goose Inn at Fressingfield in 1990 and launched it as one of Britain’s first gastropubs. In November 1999, they bought the Crown and Castle Hotel in Orford near Woodbridge, Suffolk, and restored it as a modern country house hotel.

She was awarded Watson an Honorary Doctorate for services to hospitality at the University of Suffolk in 2010.

Ruth then sold her interest in the Crown and Castle in October 2017, stating, “dealing with bureaucracy has long overtaken the core business of cooking and serving good food.”

The program premiered on Channel 4 at 8.00 pm on Wednesday, 30 September 2009.

Ruth Watson’s Hotel Rescue was not recommissioned for any further series after its initial run. However, in April 2010, Watson guest-presented the Funk & Soul Show on BBC 6 Music, standing in for Craig Charles, and later hosted her own 15-part series, Ruth Watson Means Business!, in 2013, on Channel 4.
