The Career of William Delahunt
U.S. House of Representatives: Elections
In 1996, Democratic Congressman Gerry Studds decided to retire, opening up the position of Representative of Massachusetts’s 10th congressional district.
Delahunt ran for the position and, on September 17th, won the Democratic primary election with 38% of the vote. He lost in Norfolk County but won Plymouth County by a narrow margin of just 119 votes after a recount in a handful of contested towns.
Philip W Johnston of Marshfield conceded defeat shortly after.
On March 4, 2010, The Boston Globe confirmed the retirement of politician Bill Delahunt.
During his time in office, he was re-elected six times and always won by a wide margin – earning at least 32 percentage points each time.
However, shortly before announcing his retirement, it was discovered that while serving as district attorney for Norfolk County, Delahunt refused to file charges against Amy Bishop after she shot and killed her brother in 1986.
Then, on February 12, 2010, Bishop murdered three of her colleagues at the University of Alabama in Huntsville.

Tenure
As an active measure during his first term in office, he created the bipartisan caucus on the United States Coast Guard in order to bring more awareness to the lack of resources and security at the ports of Massachusetts.
By co-chairing this caucus with two other Coast Guard veterans, Reps. Howard Coble (R-NC) and Gene Taylor (D-MS), he was able to bring more attention to and eventually remedy the issues at hand within his district.
In 2005, Bill met with then Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez to arrange an assistance program. The program aims to ask Venezuela to supply winter home heating oil at a 40% price reduction to thousands of low-income residents of Massachusetts.
This program was carried out by Venezuelan-owned Citgo which has been expanded to help half a million people across the U.S. This also brought accusations that Bill was assisting an anti-American leader.
Bill served as a Chairman of the United States House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on International Organizations, Human Rights, and Oversight in the 110th Congress.
Moreover, he was a consistent opponent of the Iraq war.
On March 10, 2010, Bill voted against a measure to bring troops home from Afghanistan.

Career Highlights
Delahunt was a key player in the International Violence Against Women Act (IVAWA), H.R. 4594, in the 111th Congress, serving as the main Democratic sponsor in the House of Representatives.
He also co-chaired the bipartisan Coast Guard Caucus; House Older Americans Caucus; and the Congressional Working Group on Cuba.
In addition, Delahunt advocated for a diverse range of legislative priorities, from streamlining international adoptions to minimizing wrongful convictions.

Post-Congressional Career
Delahunt Group
After retiring from his long-standing career in Congress, Delahunt decided to form the Delahunt Group – a consulting firm that would help with a variety of things like government affairs, strategy development for business market entry, corporate advisory services, and more.
When asked about his reasoning for starting this group, Delahunt told the Cape Cod Times that he saw it as a logical extension of the work he did while he was in Congress. He explained that as a legislator, he was always working on setting policy at a macro level.
Delahunt, filling a gap created by Abramoff’s conviction, lobbied on behalf of the Wampanoag people in Massachusetts for Indian gaming rights with state legislators less than two months after leaving Congress. Abramoff, associated with the Jack Abramoff Indian lobbying scandal, was their previous lobbyist.
By law, Delahunt cannot lobby Congress for at least a year but he can lobby state legislatures.
Delahunt has also partnered with the Washington, DC-based Prime Policy Group to help American companies establish themselves in foreign countries while providing foreign businesses with connections to markets in the United States.
Prime Policy Group’s clients include companies like Accenture, which have been accused of moving their business offshore to avoid paying U.S. taxes.
This partnership is advantageous for Delahunt as Wampanoag’s primary backers are the Malaysian gambling giant Genting Group.
Other Ventures
Delahunt, the President of Medical Marijuana of Massachusetts Inc., applied for three medical marijuana dispensary licenses from the state Department of Public Health.
His reasoning behind applying for licenses in different counties is to prevent any possible competition between dispensaries during the selection process.

Delahunt strongly believes in the powers of medical marijuana and its ability to thwart the rise in prescription drug abuse.
He plans to be significantly involved in the operations of any dispensaries that Medical Marijuana of Massachusetts opens.
Bill also became the acting director of the Harvard Institute of Politics in late May 2017.
Then, he helped free a U.S. citizen in 2013 who was imprisoned by the Venezuelan government.
