The Career of Jack Murphy
Jack Murphy was a tall left-handed batsman and bowler who played first-XI cricket for three seasons with Glamorgan.
Unfortunately, an injury to his left knee early on in the 2019 season caused him to have to retire at only 24 years old, just barely a year after he had established himself as an opening batsman having switched from being an opening bowler.
In 2018, Jack made history during a Championship match with Kent at Sophia Gardens when he made an unbeaten 39 – the lowest score for 96 years by a Glamorgan batsman carrying his bat.
Watchful and patient, Jack bats through the second innings of the game for 200 minutes, making 54 and sharing in a stand of 126 with Shaun Marsh.
Later in the season, during the return fixture at Canterbury, Jack again adopts a resolute approach at number three, completing a career-best 8o in the first innings, followed by an unbeaten 22* in the second.
However, Glamorgan was again defeated by an innings.
Jack Murphy, from the Glamorgan academy, had a great 2018 season in comparison to the dismal season the county had as a whole.
In the final match of the season, against Kent – where Glamorgan was confirmed as Championship wooden spoonists after losing by an innings – Murphy’s impressive single-handed performance of 80 out of 186 earned him a new two-year deal from the county. There was no let up in Glamorgan’s drive to find homegrown players, even after such public failure.
Glamorgan signed Murphy, a left-handed all-rounder with a disciplined batting approach, on a development contract in 2014 after he was named Academy Player of the Year in 2013.
He missed 2012 due to injury but returned to play for Ammanford in the South Wales Premier League and made regular appearances for Glamorgan’s second XI.
He spent the following winter in New Zealand. Murphy made his first-class debut against Glamorgan playing for Cardiff MCCU in 2015.
Jack was known for his punishing left-hand batting and more-than-useful fast/medium bowling. He was a great character and a popular member of the First XI.
In the 2017/18 season, he made 414 runs at 41 and took 14 wickets at 16.
Highlights of his season included an opening partnership of 224 – our second-highest ever- with skipper Daniel Forbes against Chelsea and 155 with Jeremy Lawlor for the second wicket against Bentleigh.
Jack retired from all forms of cricket in 2019, at the age of 24, due to a knee injury that ended his 16-game first-class career with Glamorgan CC in Wales, where he scored 630 runs.
Jack is now a Sports Coach and head of junior games at Cathedral School in Llandaff, Wales, as well as the coach of Wales Under 14s cricket team.
