Jean-Marc Parents is an actor and writer who is most well-known for The Barbarian Invasions, Les filles de Caleb and Les pots cassés.
After a brief stint training as a comedian, he was first discovered in 1988 at the Just for Laughs auditions with his original act, L’Handicap 1. Then he went on to form a duo with Michel Barrette. In 1989, he produced the show “Open from the top.”
In the 1990s, he specialized in comedy marathon shows that would last several hours. He would start with a conventional, scripted set lasting about two hours, followed by several hours of improvisation.
These shows were often quite extravagant, such as when he ordered pizza for the entire audience from a dumbfounded restaurateur.
Jean-Marc is a Quebec comedian who became the spokesperson for Opération Nez rouge in 1993. He was the first comedian from Quebec to perform at the Montreal Forum and held a “pajama party” at the Salle Pierre-Mercure at UQAM, where 900 guests were invited.
He did improvisation and obtained the animation of a comedy show on the TQS television network in 1996 called L’Heure JMP, which was very popular. Jean-Marc is often illustrated in the pages of the humor magazine Safarir.
One evening during his program L’Heure JMP, Jean-Marc asked his viewers to do something a little out-of-the-ordinary: he asked them to “flash” (switch) the lights in their houses for a few minutes. This little game, according to Jean-Marc, was a way to see how many people were watching the show live.
Surprisingly, the game quickly became popular throughout Quebec. He reproduced it every night for a while and even managed to get a free plane ride to film live from the air with other spectators on board as the lights turned on and off below.
