The Career of Nick Black
After he qualified in medicine from Birmingham University in 1974, he worked in various NHS hospitals before joining Save the Children Fund (UK), where he ran a child health program in Nepal.
He then decided to pursue his passion for public health by undertaking a doctorate on the reasons for the epidemic of surgery for glue ears in the UK.
For the next three years, he was employed half-time as a lecturer at the Open University, writing a new distance-learning course called ‘Health & Disease’ with a biologist, sociologist, and economist. The other half of his time was spent working as a Consultant in Public Health for Oxfordshire Health Authority.
