Who is Viv Graham?

Vivian Graham was born in 1959 to Hazel Leck and Eric “Jack” Graham and grew up in Highfield, Rowlands Gill, a village near Gateshead.

After giving up his career as a successful amateur boxer, Graham became a doorman, working with well-known Gateshead hardmen Billy Robinson and Paddy Leonard.

With his outstanding abilities as a 17-stone boxer, who could bench press 520lbs, he was soon operating a small army of doormen himself and protecting various licensed premises in central Newcastle, Byker, and Wallsend.

Unfortunately, Viv was an English criminal who was shot and killed on December 31st, 1993. His murder remains unsolved to this day.

Relationship and Family

Viv Graham lived with his fiancée, Anna Connelly, and her children from a previous relationship in Walkerville, Newcastle. He was seen as a father figure and financially provided for them.

Connelly’s brother, Peter, ran a pub in the Byker area of the city. He would often be approached by other pub owners who required Graham’s services.

On 25 March 2010, Dean, Graham’s son, was found dead at the wheel of his car on the Whinfield Industrial Estate, near his home in Rowlands Gill.

Viv Jnr, Graham’s other son, was attacked by thugs in 2012 and left with a fractured skull. It seems that Viv Jnr has, on occasion, attempted to live up to his father’s reputation.

During an abortive attempt to reclaim money allegedly owed to his cousin, young Graham assaulted the debtor’s father. When he returned empty-handed to his cousin’s home, he headbutted and punched a woman who told him to calm down.

With his great abilities as a 17-stone boxer, who could bench press 520lbs, he soon operated a small army of doormen himself and protected various licensed premises in central Newcastle, Byker, and Wallsend.

Graham made a lot of money from his criminal activities–sometimes earning more than 30,000 pounds per week in 1992. However, he and his partner’s spendthrift ways caused them to lose a lot of their wealth.

Graham also liked to gamble, which didn’t help their financial situation.

He often spent time at bookmakers or Andy Webb’s gym in Jesmond, Newcastle.

Viv Graham’s Prison Term (Incident with Stuart Watson)

Graham was a well-known ‘hardman’ notorious for his intimidating presence and reputation of violence, particularly in the North East of England.

This only increased after he had defeated several other well-known hardmen from Tyneside, as well as Stuart Watson – a rival doorman with a large reputation. The incident leading to Watson’s assault occurred in 1989 when Graham was working with a gang who were denied access to a club by Watson, the head doorman at the time.

Watson was concerned that the gang would not respect other club-goers and act like they owned the place. Furthermore, he wanted to preserve his position at the club.

Unable to intimidate Watson, who was not small in stature, members of the gang returned to the club with Viv Graham and some of his associates.

The altercation occurred at Hobo’s nightclub in Newcastle, which has since been demolished. The CCTV footage from that night showed Graham punching Watson multiple times and throwing him around the reception area. This resulted in Graham being convicted and sentenced to prison even though Watson refused to testify against him.

Whilst serving his own prison sentence, Graham took a keen interest in the case of Stephen Craven, who was convicted of murdering Penny Laing at Newcastle’s Studio nightclub on December 24, 1989.

Despite Craven always maintaining his innocence, Graham attempted to assist him in any way possible. Rough Justice, the BBC program, covered the murder conviction in ‘Murder at the Studio,’ which was first broadcast on April 1, 1997. Craven’s conviction remains in place to this day.

Release

After being released from prison, Graham quickly distanced himself from any former criminal associates, which led to many disputes. He also tried to reconcile with Watson.

Soon enough, Graham was charged with assault after brutally punching a man. People who he had previously caused problems for began to take their revenge.

One night at a Newcastle nightclub, Graham got into an altercation with a gang member over drug dealing in his establishment. The gang member escaped through the fire exit with Graham in close pursuit.

Graham was targeted by gangs who wanted to expand their drug operations, but he survived several attempts on his life. His stance against drugs put him at odds with the gangs, who saw him as a threat to their business.

Graham knows their plans to remove his men from the Doors of Newcastle’s pubs and clubs, and he received death threats almost daily. Shortly after that, a car drove past his home before he died. One of the passengers shot out the windows of his house.

Then in 1993, on Christmas Eve, Graham was involved in a physical altercation with a gang in Newcastle. They had tried to remove Graham and his people from an establishment, but Graham – being there in person – fought back. He repeatedly punched one of the gang members, breaking his jaw and causing the other members to retreat quickly.

Viv Graham’s Death

Viv’s involvement in organized crime led to him becoming a figure of reputation in the city. He was extorting money and running illegal businesses.

In 1988, someone attempted to kill him in the act of revenge for an earlier assault that Graham and another bouncer had committed. The victim suffered permanent injuries from the unprovoked attack.

At the time of his death, Graham’s car was in danger of being repossessed.

Viv Graham was returning to his parked car on New Year’s Eve 1993 from Wallsend High Street when he was ambushed.

The suspects had broken Viv’s Ford Sierra Sapphire Cosworth on the offside front window. This may be because to have him hesitate before entering the vehicle so that Graham would return to the parked car.

However, it’s unclear if this was done well before the shooting.

Viv was a local bouncer in Wallsend, England, who was shot three times by an unidentified gunman.

Graham received one shot that hit him in the back, and he was still able to drag himself back to Wallsend High Street. There he was found by another bouncer, Terry Scott.

Even though he received thirty pints of blood, Viv Graham died at North Tyneside General Hospital just four hours later. He was only 34 years old.

Viv Graham had received a telephone death threat just hours before he was shot. He is buried at Hookergate Cemetery.
