Get to Know Sarah Fisher
Sarah Marie Fisher, born on October 4th, 1980, is an American former professional race car driver. She competed in the Indy Racing League (IRL) from 1999 to 2010, as well as the Indianapolis 500 during that time.
Sarah also raced in the NASCAR West Series for two years, from 2004-2005. Out of the 81 IndyCar Series events she took part in, Sarah achieved her best finish of second place at the 2001 Infiniti Grand Prix of Miami. This was also the highest placing for any woman in the IRL until Danica Patrick’s victory in the 2008 Indy Japan 300.

In 2002, Fisher made history as the first female driver to win a pole position in a major American open-wheel race.
She later went on to compete in the Indianapolis 500 nine times – more than any other woman.
Fisher was born into a racing family in Ohio, and she began competing at age five in quarter-midget races.
Three years later, she started karting and won three World Karting Association championships. Fisher then moved on to sprint car racing, where she had moderate success.
Finally, she made her IRL debut at the last race of the 1999 season.

Fisher had a successful 11-year professional career, but sponsorship problems limited her participation in the series.
In 2008, she established and drove for Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing until her retirement at the end of 2010.
In retirement, Fisher focused full-time on Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing, with drivers Ed Carpenter and Josef Newgarden achieving modest success with the team.
She retained ownership of the team until she merged it with Ed Carpenter Racing in 2010 to create CFH Racing.
In 2016, Fisher decided to sell her stake in CFH Racing to focus on a full-time business career in Indiana but chose to stay with the team to help with sponsorship development.
In the same year, she was hired as the IndyCar Series’ official Safety Car driver – a role she shares with former driver Oriol Servià.
The Beginning of Sarah Fisher’s Career
Fisher was first gifted a Barbie pedal vehicle at four and began racing the following year.
For three years, she raced in a blue and white 3 hp (2.2 kW) quarter-midget car until her parents decided she was ready to compete at small, indoor tracks.
With a devised schedule and support from both of her parents, Fisher began her racing career. Jacques Villeneuve, Steve Kinser, and Dave Blaney are a few of the racers she idolizes.
Fisher began racing go-karts at the age of eight on the East Coast after her father taught her how they worked. She quickly joined the World Karting Association (WKA) and started racking up some impressive wins, including the Grand National Championship four times in 1991, 1993, and 1994; she was also Circleville Points Champion in 1993.

Fisher not only drove in Automobile Racing Club of America (ARCA) and National Alliance of Midget Auto Racing-sanctioned events on asphalt ovals in the Midwestern United States, but she also won five feature races of the 23 she entered and broke Winchester Speedway’s lap record.
In addition, she graduated seventh overall in a class of 178 with honors and an A average from Teays Valley High School in Ashville, Ohio. Her grade point average was an impressive 4.178, which earned her induction into the National Honor Society. She also took 30 post-secondary credits at Columbus State Community College.
Dale Pelfrey, the owner of Team Pelfrey, took notice of Fisher’s victory at Winchester Speedway and immediately signed her to a three-year contract on August 24, 1999.
Just six days later, she passed an IRL-sanctioned rookie test at Las Vegas Motor Speedway under the supervision of former driver Johnny Rutherford – making her the youngest person to do so.
Fisher decided not to race at the track just yet, wanting first to gain more experience.
Additionally, she chose not to enter the U.S. F2000 National Championship – even though several IRL drivers participate in the series to further their careers.
