A hugely talented rider, Quinn opted to bypass further development in the U23 ranks and moved straight into the WorldTour with Trek-Segafredo.

Quinn excelled in punchy one-day races and wasted no time claiming his first professional win in the Tour de Wallonie in 2021, along with the overall and young rider classifications.

21-year-old Quinn had an impressive first season, completing his first Grand Tour and missing a victory after joining the breakaway in Stage 19 of La Vuelta an Espana. He finished the season strong with a hard-fought third place.

Career Highlights

On July 22, 2021, Quinn Simmons took his first professional victory on Stage 3 of the Tour de Wallonie.

By taking the overall lead in the process, he managed to maintain his lead until the race’s conclusion – winning his first professional stage race.

Quinn made his Grand Tour debut in 2021 Vuelta an España. At first, he was involved in a breakaway on stage 16, but, unfortunately, the peloton caught the group in the final kilometers.

However, three stages later, he was part of another breakaway, which stayed in front until the finish line. He even placed third in the final sprint behind Rui Oliveira and winner Magnus Cort.

Early in the 2022 season, Simmons had a strong finish in Strade Bianche, coming in seventh place. He then went on to race in Tirreno-Adriatico, where he served primarily as a domestique for team leader Giulio Ciccone.

However, on stage 4, he was part of the main breakaway and collected enough points to take the lead and earn the green jersey.

Then, he summed up his total on stage 6 and successfully defended his title as leader of the mountains for the remainder of the race.

Then, Quinn entered the 2022 Tour de Suisse and quickly took the lead in the mountains classification. He remained in first place when 30 other riders had to leave the race due to a Covid outbreak.

On stage 6, he joined the breakaway in order to collect KOM points. However, it was an extremely hot day, and he eventually ran out of water, which caused him to fall behind.

Quinn fought back to the front and competed for the stage win after getting water from the team car. He finished the final two stages, claiming the KOM jersey in the process.

Tour de France

Quinn Simmons was elated to find out he made the starting list for the Tour de France in 2022.

However, during stage 3, he ran into some trouble and fell behind his team late in the stage. His teammates were upfront contending for the lead while he was stuck at the back of the pack.

In an attempt to catch up, he rode off-road through the grass instead of being stuck in the pack. Even though he could rejoin his team, it cost him dearly after the stage was over.

Quinn was fined 500 Francs, 25 UCI world tour points, +0:20 in the general classification, 40 points in the points competition, and 1 point in the mountains classification.

On stage 6, he got into the first Tour breakaway of his career, which was a notable feat as it included Jakob Fuglsang and the yellow jersey of Wout Van Aert.

The breakaway didn’t stick; eventually, it was just Simmons and Van Aert left riding together.

As the race progressed, Simmons began to take part in more breakaways. His strategy on stage 14 was to extend the gap over the peloton by riding hard up one of the middle climbs. He rode so hard that he stopped and vomited after he was finished.

His teammate Pedersen went on to win the stage. On stage 19, Simmons was named Most Combative Rider.

Controversy

On September 30, 2020, Trek–Segafredo suspended Simmons indefinitely for his actions on Twitter.

In the incident, he responded to an anti-Trump tweet from Dutch cycling journalist José Been with a black hand emoji and the phrase “Buh-bye.”

Simmons’ use of the black hand emoji was considered racially insensitive by the team, leading to his suspension.

In a later apology, Simmons claimed that he didn’t have any racist intent. Trek-Segafredo allowed him to come back to the team in November.

At a press conference, after he was reinstated, Simmons argued that the suspension was undeserved and “incorrect.”
